Geometrical patterns on your walls can be achieved through wallpaper, free hand painting, taping or stencils that have been hand made.  Painting can be laborious when considering a  painted pattern on the wall.  A complex pattern can take weeks to achieve depending on the skill of the painter, and the ornate details of the design.  Smaller patterns with complexity are harder to produce by hand.   If you are willing to put in the time and effort, and create a stencil, you can recreate any pattern of your liking. Here is an example of a furniture piece painted from a hand cut stencil.    It was worth the time and the effort to create your own stencil if you are really desire a special pattern to be incorporated into your home.  The stencil can be used again and again by simply washing in between painting.  Chinoiserie wallpaper can cost an arm and a leg, but if you have the time to create a stencil, it can be worth the time and effort in getting the colors you are after.

Real estate developer Brad Korzen, hired her to renovate the interiors of a few of his residential properties.   She convinced him to renovate his 40's era hotel "the Avalon" in Beverly Hills, California.   One hotel after another, her colorful theatrical interiors caught attention, and her career took off. The story had a good ending, she married Brad Korzen in 2002.

After the renovations of their Beverly Hills mansion in 2006, she produced a book entitled “Domicilum Decoratus,” featuring photographs of her Beverly Hills mansion, every room having a chapter of its own.

By 2008, Kelly Wearstler was asked to feature as a judge on Bravo’s “Top Design”.   She caught media attention on her extravagant outfits, and how stopping hair.  She has introduced lines of striking rugs, fabrics and wallpaper, as well as a unique line of gifts for Bergdorf Goodman

Check out my post on transferware. Porcelain production became popular, and the popularity of rococo Chinoiserie became popular between 1740-1770, and still is collectible today.  Louis XV of France furthered the popularity, as he especially enjoyed the style of rococo and Chinoiserie fit perfectly withthe ornate decor.  Entire rooms were hand painted with Chinoiserie influences. Chinese themes became apparent in the formal areas of the German and Russian palaces. Cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale embellished on the Chinoiserie themes creating mahogany tables, cabinets and chairs that were styled after the different characteristics of Chinoiserie style.  I think our generation especially appreciates the laborious details of hand worked craftsmanship in era of machine made products.

Fred Taylor, a furniture detective sheds light on the commonly found drum table with drawers. "The drawer comes from the English "rent" table. A rent table was a round table with seven drawers that belonged to a landlord. Renters deposited their rent in the drawer marked for the day of the week their rent was due." Often times these tables are found with just two drawers, while the rest are dummy drawers. These tables are some of the most elegant tables that were made.

Linen sofas are the perfect back drop to adding silk and shine.  The wonderful contrast of a simple plain couch gives homeowners the opportunity to change with the times and the freedom to mix things up a bit just by changing the throw pillows.  I would highly suggest buying a couch with natural earth colors, and jazzing it up with color with throws and accessories.   The zebra cowhide rug here, adds more depth and pattern to the space.

Antiques are often the only affordable way of getting the more expensive woods into a room.  Todays furniture doesn't have the rich woods in design and detail that antiques often do.

Prince George became the ruler of the monarch between 1811-1820, and had his own interpretation of style. It was then popular to copy actual furniture of the classical Roman and Greek times. Key Features to the Regency Styles:

-Antique painted chairs fetch quite a bit of money if they are genuinely from the regency period. The common thought during the 1800's was that wood was more desired than painted pieces, so solid rosewood, mahogany, and ebony are typically more expensive today.

- Brass inlays became popular in Regency period furniture, as brass was longer lasting than marquetry.

-Signature styles of the Regency period was the Sofa Table, Sabre Leg,Cable Twist and Metal Grille

- Revival of painted pieces with black lacquer, and a revival of japanning or chinoiserie

-Wide use of metal mounts became popular from the Egyptian themes of the empire style. The Regency period followed suit,seeing more lion paw feet and ormolu (imitation gold decoration)

Federal style flourished between 1785-1820 in America and was in fact influenced by the Empire style in France, and the Roman republic, which the United States believed it resembled. You can buy these mirrors here

Federal style incorporates the neoclassical influences of Hepplewhite and Sheraton including straight and delicate lines, inlay and contrasting wood veneers. Characteristics include slender legs, very delicate decoration, and symmetry. Many doors and entrances are often framed by columns and framing over the door. Living in Virginia, many of these antiques show up here and amoung the southern states more so because  they are the older parts of the country, and the first settled states. Though, it is simply amazing what people donate to Goodwills and second hand stores, not knowing what is valuable. A $40,000 painting was donated to a Baltimore Salvation Army...(I am sure accidently)

The one tip I can suggest when looking for a higher end convex mirror from late 18th century period, is be sure that it is carved WOOD, and not plastic. I drove an hour to look at one mirror, and didn't think to ask if the mirror was plastic or wood. The plastic mirrors, are just as beautiful, but not as valuable. BUT, if you want to just decorate, get a pair of the plastic ones, then foil the mirror with Gold leaf. Why not? (Mirror to the left The Federalist Antiques)

Parissien also does an excellent job at examining the Regency styled house of England and America. He doesn't miss the opportunity to investigate details of typical homes breaking down the architectural details, colour schemes and furniture for each room. Steven Parissien also pays highlight to key designers as John Soane and Thomas Hope. It is a book worth getting!

Steven Parissien is the Director of Sotheby's Institute, London.   Dr. Parissien has written extensively on Georgian architecture, society and building conservation, including Regency Style (Phaidon Press, 1992), which examined the constituent parts of the Regency House in England and America. His second book, Adam Style (Phaidon Press, 1992), was voted Apollo Magazine's "Book of the Year" for 1992 and the American Institute of Architecture's "Book of the Year Choice" for 1993.
