Nate Berkus’s Gold Coast condo is still being blogged today, because antiques just never go out of style. Elle Decor featured this lovely condo overlooking Lake Michigan, located in a vintage 1929 building. The condo was renovated in the 40’s by architect Samuel Marx, who was a a high-society mid-century-modern architect. Berkus acquired the condo for 500 K, and renovated the space to reflect his style giving the home a fresh, glamorous elegance. In January of 2011, Burkus listed the seven-room, 3,980 square foot Gold Coast condo for $2.65 million reports the Chicago Tribune. Among the incredible antiques, the chinese Chippendale guilt bamboo chairs truly make a presence in this room. Chinese Chippendale chairs can make a statement in any home, because of their paint able canvas and ornate design making it incredibly appealing. Bamboo chairs have been typically seen in black & gold, white & gold, and in recent years bright colors such as green and yellow. Berkus showcases his chairs in a gold leaf finish for a high end appeal. Bamboo has got to be one of the more versatile styles that give you the option to alter it to fit the interior of your home, which makes this style of chair very appealing.
Berkus retained some of the original features such as the fireplace and paneling that Marx had installed, but added additional renovations. The condo was installed with new hardwood floors, and the master bath was fitted with a custom English tub. Berkus also updated the kitchen with a back splash and new appliances. An air-conditioning system was added along with a new electrical system. The home was filled with 90% vintage and antique pieces, which is why we love it so much. The dining room features a table made from concrete, bronze and wood that Berkus designed which was surrounded by 1940s American dining chairs and illuminated by a ’50s Italian chandelier. The entrance sits a 1940s Jacques Adnet table and near sits an Regency chair Berkus discovered at Leslie Hindman, the auction house he worked for a decade ago. Let us not forget the art……. Berkus combined dozens of photographs and paintings on his walls which give a vintage appeal and high investment appeal. Some of his collections include Jacques Villon, Günther Förg, and Douglas Reid Fogelson. The condo been featured in Elle Decor in the September 08 issue and the Chicago magazine.
