10+ Of The Best Historical Yellow Rooms

Home Beautiful Shades Of Yellow

Mineral pigments such as iron oxide, red ocher, and red lead, white lead and yellow ocher have been common pigments dating back to ancient times. Synthetic yellow pigments included patent yellow introduced in 1781, Naples yellow in 1800, and chrome yellow, in 1820.  Yellow has always been a popular color for London homes, it works well with the gray skies, and dull rainy days London is known for.  Yellow seems to brighten and warm up any space more than many of the grays and taupes, and likely why it remains to be still quite popular today. Colors such as saffron, butter, dandelion, corn, buttercup, canary, and citrine, are fantastic colors to base a home around.

Home Beautiful Magazine compiled the very best shades of yellow by the top designers, which takes the guessing work out of picking the best yellow shade for your own home. See the original article here

Top Row:

“In a guest room that seems a little staid, paint the bed. This is a Ming yellow like you see in Chinese silk robes, with a little lemon and mustard in it, which gives it more dimension.”Kim Alexandriuk , Farrow & Ball‘s Babouche 223

“It’s one of those spaces that people go through quickly, so you can afford a higher level of drama. Often, there’s not natural light, so you need a heavily saturated color like this warm, yolky yellow. Get it in full gloss because the gloss gives it depth, and it’s much simpler to apply than glazing.”Christopher Drake , Benjamin Moore‘s Showtime 923

“Ocher feels like a neutral to me — a deep, earthy yellow that reminds me of southern Italy and Turkey. It looks good with other earthy colors, like terra-cotta or gray-blue, and it is really beautiful with lilac, lime green, and aubergine. People look at it and say, ‘Oh no, I couldn’t possibly.’ But the earthier colors can be really relaxing.” Sara Bengur, Donald Kaufman Color Collection‘s DKC-20

Middle Row

“It’s the color of afternoon light — that end-of-the-day moment when it feels warm and mellow and everything has a glow. I’m thinking some beautiful house on the Mediterranean, and we’re sitting outside and eating figs with a bottle of white wine.” Sara Bengur , Donald Kaufman Color Collection‘s DKC-30

“One of my favorite spots in Florence is sitting on the balcony of the Lungarno Hotel — all those shades of sun-drenched yellow. It’s a color you see in every Italian town; you wonder how they got it so right.” Elissa Cullman , Benjamin Moore‘s Dalila 319

“Kitchens often have so little wall space you have to make the color count. This is sunshine in a can. I like a yellow with a little bit of brown in it, as opposed to a yellow with green. Looks wonderful with wood.” Beverly Ellsley , Benjamin Moore‘s Golden Honey 297

Bottom Row

“It’s hard to get yellow right — usually it’s too green or too red or too muddy. But this is nice and clear, without being shrill. If it’s too vivid, it’s like living in an omelet.”John Yunis , Fine Paints of Europe‘s Sunnyside Lane 7014T

“Lecce, Italy, is famous for its Baroque architecture — it’s that plaster that looks good only after 400 years. And it changes in different lights — apricot one minute and almost burnt siena the next.” Kathryn M. Ireland , Ralph Lauren Paint‘s Goldfinch GH105

This is a medium-strength yellow, the color of fresh pineapple. People love it. It’s just a happy color. Try it in a living room or dining room with a pale blue ceiling and white woodwork. It’s like sunshine. Everything looks good against it — blue-and-white porcelain, a floral chintz.”Mario Buatta, Benjamin Moore‘s Sundance 2022-50

Here are a few pieces of information about the pictures featured in this post.

Monticello’s Estate

When the Thomas Jefferson Foundation discovered that the Wedgwood blue dining room photographed in every history book, was not actually blue when President Jefferson dined there, they decided to make drastic changes to get it back to it’s original appearance.  The foundation’s extensive research showed that Jefferson chose a brilliant chrome yellow around 1815.  They found that the Wedgewood blue color only dates to 1936.

Chrome yellow was one of the most fashionable colors of the time and also one of the most expensive, costing $5 per pound, twice as much as Prussian blue and 33 times more than white lead.  The yellow tinted walls provided a more luminous reflection of sunlight and candlelight prior to household electricity.

Ralph Lauren sponsored the dining room restoration, including a reproduction of a sideboard similar to one Jefferson bought in 1790, a French marble console table, and an interpretation of the Abbeville carpet Jefferson purchased in France in the 1780s.  Jefferson designed his Monticello home outside of Charlottesville himself, basing it on the neoclassical principles of architect Andrea Palladio.

Nancy Lancaster’s London Yellow Sitting Room

This room was designed by John Fowler in 1957 and remains in style and current today.  Fowler applied numerous layers of glaze over a butter yellow paint.

The World of Interiors recreated the Yellow Room that Nancy Lancaster had decorated in her home in Mayfair in 1959.  The editor Rupert Thomas worked with Colefax and Fowler to remake this room and was photographed by Christopher Simon Sykes.

In the World Of Interiors article they point out “initially the color was much paler, more like that of a lemon, but over years it darkened to the deep buttery yellow of legend.”

The White House

George Washington, and his Irish architect, James Hoban thought the president’s residence should look like an English country house.  The White House was first occupied in 1800, when John Adams moved in at the end of his term.  During the War of 1812, the British burned it down, along with the rest of Washington, forced the idea of starting over elsewhere. The capital remained where it was, and the White House was rebuilt.

Claydon House

Claydon House is a country house in the Aylesbury Vale, Buckinghamshire, England. Claydon House is a country house in the Aylesbury Vale, Buckinghamshire, England, close to the village of Middle Claydon. It was built between 1757 and 1771 and is now owned by the National Trust.

Goodwood House

Goodwood House is a country house in West Sussex in southern England. It is the seat of the Dukes of Richmond. Several architects have contributed to the design of the house, including James Wyatt.
It was the intention to build the house to a unique octagonal layout, but only three of the eight sides were built. Some of the older parts of the house also survive, although some sections were demolished in the
mid 20th century. The house has opulent neo-classical interiors

Sir John Soane’s Museum

Sir John Soane’s Museum was formerly the home of the neo-classical architect Sir John Soane. It holds many drawings and models of his projects and the collections of paintings, drawings and antiquities that he assembled.  John Soane had an eye for decorative pattern and symmetry.   This museum houses Greek vases, Roman busts, Napoleonic memorabilia and many more breathtaking antiques.

The World of Interiors magazine featured the breathtaking Ven House in their October 2011 issue.  Jasper Conran worked on the reformation of Ven House with the help of his great friend Edward Hurst.  See my article here

Designers on Color

There’s no doubt about it—yellow is a color that lifts one’s spirits,” says designer Bunny Williams. “When painting your walls, yellow is often a hard color to get right. It often goes too green or is too pale and washed out. I like yellows that have some depth to them and aren’t timid. Farrow & Ball Yellow Ground and Orangery are two of my favorites.” Bunny Williams

I rarely use strong shades of yellow,” says designer Stephen Sills. “I prefer a faded and toned-down yellow to make an environment peaceful.” Stephen Sills

“What could be better than being surrounded by sunshine even on a gray day,” says designer Jamie Drake. “A strong yellow will do just that. I love a yellow with a touch of red in it, so it stays warm and bright like an optimistic embrace.” Jamie Drake
